Japan-HongKong Joint Reconnaissance Team4.1. Neiwan
Neiwan is a small town located about 50km north of the epicenter of the Jiji-earthquake,and is at the north end of the active Chelungpu fault (Fig.1 in Section 4). There are some distinct north-south oriented faults. One of them has a sheer offset of about 5 meters. Most of dwellings in this town are built along an east-west oriented road. The faults intersect the road. Especially, dwellings sustained heavy damage are seen nearby the intersections. The representative damage in this town is as follows.
- Apartment houses sustained damage
A RC apartment house seemed to be built recently sustained heavy damage on the fault. The number of stories is 3. The longitudinal length is 25 meters (6 spans) and the transverse length is 12 meters (3 spans). The fault is running through this apartment. Half of the spans on the faulting sustained all story collapse (photo 1). The first floor is raised up to the ceiling (photo 2).

- Multiple dwelling houses sustained damage
Each of four 3 stories multiple dwelling houses built this year sustained different kind of damage. Two of these houses built along the road with piloti are collapsed at the first story (photo 3 ). The superstructure of the others without piloti sustained no damage, but wholeness of them has been tilted (photo 4 ).

- This girder bridge built in 1994 consists of parallel two bridges. Each bridge has about 100 meters in total length (4 spans) and 14 meters in width. The piers have been tilted by the deviation of the ground, and three floor systems have been fallen down from the piers.
