Visit by Prof. DesRoches from Rice University in the USA

Prof. Reginald DesRoches, William and Stephanie Sick Dean of Engineering at the George R. Brown School of Engineering at Rice University, visited our laboratory. Prof. DesRoches and our group members discussed some of our recent research progresses. Prof. DesRoches also gave a public presentation entitled “The promise of smart materials in earthquake resistant design”.

The 30th DPRI Public Lecture series was held at the Campus Plaza Kyoto, Kyoto Station, Kyoto, Japan on 24th September 2019. The theme of the 30th Session was “Managing disasters ~ Preparing to live flexibly even after a disaster ~”. Foundation of New Research Section “Health Emergency and Regional Disaster Risk Management”

The new research section named “Health Emergency and Regional Disaster Risk Management” was founded (http://www.dpri.kyoto-u.ac.jp/organization_en/iasdrrg_en/rddms/herdrm/)  and the kickoff symposium was held at Kyoto University  (http://www.dpri.kyoto-u.ac.jp/news_en/12506/) on June 29, 2019 . Prof. Kurata join the new section with double appointment. Prof. Kurata served for the symposium as a coordinator of the panel discussion. The keynote speech was held by Dr. Ryuma Kayano of WHO (World Health Organization) Kobe Center and the WHO KC website reported the activities of the symposium (https://extranet.who.int/kobe_centre/en/news/KyotoUniv_Symposium_2019).

Visit by a Group of Schalors from US and Japan

Prof. Larry Fahnestock of UIUC, Prof. James Ricles of Lehigh University, Prof. Richard Sause of Lehigh University,  Prof. Barbara Simpson of Oregon State University, Prof. Taichiro Okazaki of Hokkaido University,  and Dr. Yosuke Kawamata of NEID visited our laboratory and Prof. Simpson gave us a talk on innovative spine brace design. We also had a social gathering to deepen our collaboration.

Visited South West Jiaotong University for Joint Testing and Seminar

Prof.  Kurata,  Dr. Kailai, and Ms Onishi visisted South West Jiaotong University in  Chengdu for structural testing of beam-column connections.  Prof. Kurata gave a talk on seismic design of nonstructural components design and testing.。 The collaborative research is posted online in the SNS account of South West Jiaotong University tps://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/baSiJlEVfnhbkgGC6Nq5MQ
